My Daughter Was Sexting?

This mom was aghast about what she had seen. Her daughter had been sending sexually explicit messages to a male peer. She was surprised that her daughter was even familiar with some of this language. I explained that when teens feel anonymous they do things that they ordinarily wouldn't do. They are also testing their sexuality. This mother calmed down, spoke to her daughter about the dangers of sexting, and was proud of how calmly she handled the situation.

How would you have reacted?

This mom handled herself well. Many parents react with anger instead of addressing the real issue. Discussing the dangers of sexting (without using anger) AND staying connected to the teenager is the real challenge. If the problem persists after many safety (etc.) discussions, this mom may need to look at setting up consequences when this behavior is discovered.
